Una delegación del Comando África de los Estados Unidos (Africom), encabezada por generales John Brennan e Pedro Keravnori, se reunió en Bengasi Sadam Haftar, Jefe del Estado Mayor de las Fuerzas Terrestres del Ejército Nacional Libio (ENL) comandado por el padre de este último, Khalifa Haftar.
Según la Embajada de Estados Unidos en Libia, la reunión se centró en las formas de “fortalecer la cooperación en materia de seguridad entre Estados Unidos y Libia, así como en el apoyo a los esfuerzos liderados por Libia para reunificar las instituciones militares y de seguridad”. También estuvo presente el encargado de negocios de Estados Unidos, Jeremy Berndt.
La reunión se enmarca en el diálogo estratégico entre Washington y las autoridades libias, destinado a promover la estabilidad, la seguridad y las reformas en el sector de defensa. Durante la visita, la delegación estadounidense también recorrió instalaciones militares del LNA. “Agradecemos al Teniente General Haftar por la excelente bienvenida y por la visita a la infraestructura del LNA”, dijo la Embajada de Estados Unidos en X.
El “mariscal de campo” libio (el rango militar más alto, equivalente a un general de cinco estrellas) Khalifa Haftar había subrayado en la reunión con altos funcionarios de AFRICOM “la importancia del papel central de Estados Unidos y su contribución en la resolución de la crisis libia”, elogiando el progreso en las relaciones bilaterales y la expansión de la cooperación entre las dos partes.
Por su parte, Brennan había expresado a Haftar su “aprecio por los esfuerzos realizados por el LNA en la consolidación de la seguridad y la estabilidad, así como en la lucha contra el terrorismo y el extremismo”, informó el LNA en un comunicado. El representante militar de Africom destacó que “la continuación de estos esfuerzos es esencial para garantizar la estabilidad de la región”.
La visita de la delegación estadounidense a Bengasi sigue a la del subdirector del Estado Mayor británico para Estrategia y Operaciones, el general de la Fuerza Aérea Harvey Smyth. También en esa ocasión, las conversaciones se centraron en las perspectivas de garantizar la seguridad y la estabilidad a largo plazo en Libia y la región.

A delegation from the United States Africa Command (Africom), led by Generals John Brennan and Pedro Keravnori, met in Benghazi with Saddam Haftar, Chief of Staff of the Land Forces of the Libyan National Army (LNA) commanded by the latter's father, Khalifa Haftar.
According to the U.S. Embassy in Libya, the meeting focused on ways to “strengthen security cooperation between the United States and Libya, as well as support for Libyan-led efforts to reunify military and security institutions.” Also present was the chargé d'affaires of the United States, Jeremy Berndt.
The meeting is part of the strategic dialogue between Washington and the Libyan authorities, aimed at promoting stability, security and reforms in the defense sector. During the visit, the US delegation also toured LNA military facilities. “We thank Lieutenant General Haftar for the excellent welcome and visit to the LNA infrastructure,” said the US Embassy in X.
Libyan “field marshal” (the highest military rank, equivalent to a five-star general) Khalifa Haftar had stressed in the meeting with senior AFRICOM officials “the importance of the central role of the United States and its contribution in resolving the Libyan crisis,” praising the progress in bilateral relations and the expansion of cooperation between the two sides.
For his part, Brennan had expressed to Haftar his “appreciation for the efforts made by the LNA in consolidating security and stability, as well as in the fight against terrorism and extremism,” the LNA reported in a statement. The Africom military representative stressed that “the continuation of these efforts is essential to guarantee the stability of the region.”
The US delegation's visit to Benghazi follows that of the British Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategy and Operations, Air Force General Harvey Smyth. Also on that occasion, talks focused on the prospects of ensuring long-term security and stability in Libya and the region.
