Arabia Saudí ha lanzado uno de los mayores concursos para instalar un megaproyecto de almacenamiento con baterías de 2 GW en el país
Según los datos que ha hecho público Saudi Power Procurement Company, un total de 33 compañías han sido precalificadas para participar en la puja por esta gran instalación. De los 33 licitadores precalificados, 21 se presentaron para prestar servicios tanto tecnológicos como de gestión de las instalaciones BESS, mientras que los 12 restantes se presentaron únicamente para funciones de gestión de activos.
En el listado anunciado por la empresa saudí figuran un buen grupo de empresas españolas como X-Elio -propiedad del Brookfield-, Fotowatio (FRV) o Cox que se enfrentarán a gigantes como las petroleras Shell y Total o grandes inversores emiratíes como Masdar o Taqa.
En el listado aparecen también un amplio número de compañías chinas como China Energy Overseas Investment Company Limited (CEECOIC), China Power Engineering Consulting Group International Engineering y China Southern Power Grid International, Envision Energy o Jinko Power.
En la puja han entrado también empresas saudíes como ACWA Power Company, Alfanar Company, Al Gihaz Holding Company, Al Jomaih Energy & Water Co. Ltd.Cada proyecto se desarrollará según un modelo de construcción, propiedad y explotación, en el que el adjudicatario poseerá el 100% del capital de la sociedad instrumental (SPV) creada para desarrollar y explotar el proyecto del Proveedor Independiente de Almacenamiento (ISP).
Cada SPV firmará un Acuerdo de Servicios de Almacenamiento de 15 años con Saudi Power.La capacidad combinada de los proyectos BESS del Grupo 1 será de 2.000 MW/ 4 Hrs (8000 MWh), y comprende los siguientes proyectos: el ISP BESS Al-Muwyah de 500 MW/4Hrs y el ISP BESS Haden de 500 MW/4 horas, ambos en la provincia de La Meca y el ISP del BESS de 500MW/4Hrs Al-Khushaybi, en la provincia de Qassim y el ISP de 500MW/4Hrs Al-Kahafa BESS en la provincia de Hail.
Objetivo a 2030
El programa de almacenamiento de energía recientemente lanzado permite alcanzar el 50% de energía renovable en el mix energético del Reino para 2030, y mejora la fiabilidad y resistencia del sistema de energía eléctrica.
Según las recientes declaraciones del ministro de Energía, el príncipe Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, el país se propone instalar 48 GWh de baterías de almacenamiento para finales de esta década.Synergy Consulting, con sede en EEUU y la India, asesora a la compañía saudí en el desarrollo del programa de adquisición de capacidad de almacenamiento de energía para fomentar la producción renovable en el país.

Riyadh wants to achieve 50% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030
Saudi Arabia has launched one of the largest tenders to install a 2 GW battery storage megaproject in the country.
According to data released by the Saudi Power Procurement Company, a total of 33 companies have been prequalified to participate in the bidding for this large facility. Of the 33 prequalified bidders, 21 were present to provide both technological and management services for the BESS facilities, while the remaining 12 were present solely for asset management functions.
The list announced by the Saudi company includes a good group of Spanish companies such as X-Elio -owned by Brookfield-, Fotowatio (FRV) or Cox that will compete against giants such as oil companies Shell and Total or large Emirati investors such as Masdar or Taqa.
The list also includes a large number of Chinese companies such as China Energy Overseas Investment Company Limited (CEECOIC), China Power Engineering Consulting Group International Engineering and China Southern Power Grid International, Envision Energy or Jinko Power.
Saudi companies such as ACWA Power Company, Alfanar Company, Al Gihaz Holding Company, Al Jomaih Energy & Water Co. Ltd. have also entered the bidding process. Each project will be developed under a build, own and operate model, with the successful bidder owning 100% of the capital of the SPV created to develop and operate the Independent Storage Provider (ISP) project. Each SPV will sign a 15-year Storage Service Agreement with Saudi Power. The combined capacity of the Group 1 BESS projects will be 2,000 MW/4 Hrs (8,000 MWh), and comprises the following projects: the 500 MW/4Hrs Al-Muwyah BESS ISP and the 500 MW/4Hrs Haden BESS ISP, both in Makkah province and the 500 MW/4Hrs Al-Khushaybi BESS ISP, in Qassim province and the 500 MW/4Hrs Al-Kahafa BESS ISP in Hail province.
2030 Target
The recently launched energy storage program enables achieving 50% renewable energy in the Kingdom's energy mix by 2030, and improves the reliability and resilience of the electric power system.
According to recent statements by Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, the country aims to install 48 GWh of battery storage by the end of this decade. US and India-based Synergy Consulting is advising the Saudi company on developing the energy storage capacity acquisition program to boost renewable production in the country.
